Child Proofing Your Des Moines Home's Outlets

Your child grows. While growing, he or she explores the world around. This is a beautiful, natural process. Your child learns through tasting, touching, climbing, pushing and pulling things. But you, as a parent, know that there are safe things for your child and not-so-safe things. This leads to a delicate problem - you need to keep your child safe and not to spoil his/her learning experience. Too many articles about childproofing concentrate only on keeping a child safe, ignoring the second part of the goal which is also very important.

In this article we will focus on the dangerous and necessary electrical outlet.

There are couple of ways you can make an electrical outlet safe:
  • Pluggable outlet covers. This is a cover that inserts into an outlet like an ordinary plug and sits there, preventing a child from accessing outlet holes and inserting different items into them. However, the child can still simply pull it out and potentially chocke on it, so it is important to ensure that a pluggable cover is hard enough to remove by a child but not too hard for adult. Unfortunately, I can't think any way to ensure it than just by testing with your own outlets. These covers are cheap and easy to install, however only offer a temporary and inconvenient solution. It is also worth noting that if your outlets are frequently used, for say vacuuming, they may become loos over time, and not allow the pluggable cover to be securely inserted into the outlet.

  • Tamper Proof Outlets. Tamper Proof Outlets are standard wall outlets that feature a permanent shutter mechanism that protects children from sticking foreign objects into the receptacle (like hairpins, keys and paper clips). The spring-loaded shutter system in the outlet only allows electricity to flow when equal pressure is applied simultaneously to both shutters such as when an electrical plug is inserted. During unused conditions, both shutters are closed, and openings are covered. These outlets function just like a standard outlet and offer the best and most permanent solution to making the outlets in your Des Moines home safe for years to come.
